  12. My starter for today I got hold of some more leather yesterday and this is one of the results - saddle tan, 2.8mm thick and sewn with natural coloured waxed thread. It’s pretty chunky and will need a bit of softening/breaking in, but I can’t wait to see how the patina develops. My other creation was a new wallet, made all the easier by my Secret Santa gift. Thank you, Santa, you know who you are! J

  21. Ive had a couple of new (to me anyway!) watches recently. So its on with this old Tissot for today..Its from the 70s I assume, I got it, and it was running....of sorts! However, after sending it off to Simon, its now running like a train! (I know this for a fact...as Im a train driver...and this watch runs much better than a lot of the things I drive at least!).

  33. Picked this up at the Brunel watch fair. Not too sure about the year of manufacture or which movement it is but very much like the dial. It’s a little marmite but here it is. When I’m brave enough will take apart to the point of ascertaining the serial number. It seems to be a funny case construction

  36. Seems to be an age thing more than any other reason. When I walk around the office pretty much everyone under the age of 30 just looks at their phones for the time – the cools kids have Apple watches and the odd women wears an MK or such. The bloke who sits opposite me has a bit of a collection but mainly tries to buy the cheapest Chinese crap going to show me that you only need to spend £2.75 to get a perfectly good watch. Apparently. He often starts the conversation with "I've got a new watch Rich" to which I say “Oh right, nice one. Let’s have a look” then he’ll say “how much do you reckon it cost?”. I always politely say, I’ve got no idea then he gleefully tells me it was a fiver or something and say’s “How much was yours”. I’ll try and dodge the question and he’ll ask again so I’ll usually tell him and he just shakes his head and calls me daft. It's all quite funny really.

  37. In the communist era (and before that...) there used to be a few brands/factories of watches and clocks but not anymore. I think I've seen a start-up or two but they mostly just assemble watches or in some cases only make the cases and such. There are some folks called Noah watches that make watches out of all sorts of wood types, often expensive/exotic. The movements are japanese or swiss but the rest is made by them.

  38. It's been a while since I last posted. I'm currently in a phase of trying microbrand watches and this Nodus Trieste is my latest addition. I'm really impressed by it and thought it needed a mention. It looks different enough than your typical sub homage with its rather unique handset. The dial is a really deep black and the applied indices give it a smart and slightly dressy look. The bezel has a lovely sound to it and the the the triangle centres exactly on 12 ( take note Seiko!) It is a really manageable 41mm which is perfect for me. I have it on a rubber strap as with the bracelet on, it just hangs off my wrist a little due to the long lugs. It runs a Seiko movement that has been adjusted in numerous positions(there is a card somewhere with lots of numbers in on it). The only thing that could be better is the screw-down crown which although works perfectly fine but feels rough. Love microbrands, good affordable fun!

  39. They occasionally have some good deals on Amazon on the Seiko 5's. I bought my son one on a blue NATO for £49.99. Worth a look.
