  5. Summer Solstice today so I fancied wearing the YES Space which shows, among other things, sunrise/sunset times as well as the relative lengths of daylight/darkness. Unfortunately I just missed its party trick where the display flashes in spectacular fashion for a few seconds to announce the significance of the day. I'll have to wait until next year now!

  9. Finally, and to mark the occasion of my big Six-Oh, I have my holy grail watch. It is the wonderful Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grande Taille in steel - fitted to the lovely beads of rice bracelet. I have been admiring and coveting the Reverso since I got into watches while I was still at school! Superelegant and gorgeous. It’s been admired by dozens of folks already and I’ve only had it a few days. I promise to take some really decent pics but in the meantime...

  12. Thought I would update this as there has been a few changes. the first four on the top row are all keepers for various different reasons, the pro master has been with me through so much that it is my lucky watch and never going anywhere, it’s the watch I will be wearing when I shuffle off this mortal coil and meet the big fella! The signature grand complication was a present from the Mrs and a well made solid bit of kit it is! The newest addition, Longines moon phase, present to myself for 32 years service. Omega, birth year watch, everyone needs a dress watch! The rest may or may not move on, but probably will. There are at least three competitions in amongst them so they will be appearing shortly. My intention was to end up with 5-6 half decent watches and that’s all......but I need one for washing the car, one for gardening, one for swimming...........

  18. Personally I prefer hand wound, especially the early morning winding ritual, and you know it will still be running the next morning when you get up to wind it again, plus you'll never need to buy a watch winder. Scraping the barrel can be capable if all you want is accuracy. I love these cheapo's. No. "Grail" and cost shouldn't really equate (in my opinion only) . A watch can be both irreplaceable, and have no real value.

  21. If we ever had a thread on this, it has long since disappeared into the ether. I'm not talking of the online reviews with talking hands, but more the glossy, sometimes very expensive, but often fabulous promotional films produced by watch companies. And even including those that are naff - video's that is - it's all subjective. I'll start with three recent one's that I have enjoyed, all to do with dive watches. It would be good to see those from other brands, especially the less well known one's.

  23. And the Hodinkee series of interviews I do enjoy too https://www.hodinkee.com/browse/talking-watches although more often than not I don't have a clue who the well known person is. Now if they could get Eric Clapton on there...

  24. The article mentions the speedy pro, but neither of the pics are of the pro (one is a Reduced, the other a MK2). I am a pedant, and proud.

  25. Some high street Seiko dealers have a "trade in" deal. You give them an old piece of junk, and they give you some money off a new watch. Local dealer had this. Possibly the best looking one out of the bunch, and definitely looks better on leather.

  32. Some interesting watches in the John Lewis sale, in particular some nice Victorinox and Citizen watches, reduced to clear. https://www.johnlewis.com/browse/clearance/menswear-offers/mens-watches-offers/_/N-5nd4?intcmp=cp_cle_menswearoffers_smbl10_watchesoffers_x200618 I'd had my eye on this for a while: Victorinox Inox quartz; £272.50 which is half price from RRP (£545). This bracelet version is sold out everywhere else and seems to no longer be in production. So, yeah... ordered! There's also the rubber strap version in several different colours for around £200. Quite a lot of Citizens too, sadly the one I'd been watching was already sold out online this morning, but I might pop in to the store to see if they have any left: Happy hunting!

  35. @Daveyboyz Actually, I have found the exact sale thing. I have recently been looking at Seiko Pressage, Cocktail Time and Orient Bambinos. Prices differ wildly depending on colour. I can only assume this is because the more popular colours can demand a higher price. Shame because most of the ones I like are in the higher bracket. I would imagine this is the same for lots of watch brands since it makes sense to charge more for products you know are in demand.
