  9. Been coveting this model for ages. One finally came up that was appreciably under list price, not new but unused and guaranteed By Tudor for full 2 years. also this one has the benefit of the NATO style Tudor fabric strap as well as a brand new full steel bracelet. I've almost never worn any watch on a NATO up until now, but I have to say this one looks the dogs bollocks - as we used to say in the old days. Seriously smart but slightly casual. The eyes have already popped out on stalks back home when shown to my two sons in their 20s! It’s caused a massive dent in my little watch f

  26. I tried a few on in a local jewellers a bit back, fit and finish was excellent but I was just a bit underwhelmed and didn’t buy. I’m not sure about this buying a Micky mouser just to see what it would be like, in reality it will give you no idea what a real one would feel like, a bit like buying a Beatle kit car to see if you’d like a real 911. Waste of a hundred or so quid if you ask me but hey ho To me if you want the one, like them and can afford it crack on as the cheap look-a-likies usually only disappoint. And that’s not just watches.

  30. I'm with @scottswatches on this. Buy cheap, buy twice. All through my engineering and carpentry periods, I always found it was better to buy the best as it wouldn't let you down as cheap tools do. Even when I changed careers and went into horticulture, I still found the same was true. Your OP was about screwdrivers. There is a reason good ones are expensive...they have ball bearings under the heads and the blades are made of decent, precision ground steel... cheap Indian/Chinese versions seem to be made of chewing gum and will bend or twist under any sort of pressure. If you're going to work o

  31. Can't be as bad as the 'Crazy Hours' series where the numbers are jumbled and the hands change positions every hour... Made in several variants... Even @Roy made something similar...the RLT 25...at least the numbers were in the right positions...

  34. I can’t really contribute much to the section in terms of practical projects, because I don’t have a great array of practical or DIY skills. I am amazed at some of the things I see people making, even the things I don’t understand like @Roger the Dodger‘s project. I hope the following is acceptable, if not I’ll be happy to remove it. Back in 2011 I went to Spain to walk the Camino to Santiago, the 480 mile pilgrim route across the north of the country. I had never written a diary or journal before (or done a major long-distance hike), and all unplanned I bought a notebook and a coup

  35. I have just splashed out £30 in a local charity shop on a rather beautiful pre-owned Skagen Viggo in titanium with a steel mesh bracelet (Model number 234XXLT). I believe that this particular model is just about no longer current but I did manage find it still advertized on the Skagen website for £84.99, down from RRP of £135. I fell in love with the watch as soon as I picked it up; the quality of the watch itself seems to be impeccable and in addition to the fine aesthetics, the watch feels gorgeous in the hand with the case moving smoothly into the slinky mesh bracelet. The watch has a 42mm

  38. well i made the jump from a £500 gucci which i thought was the bees knees, to used £1500 breitling , to a used £ 2 k omega to a £3k GS / cartier, to a 5K rolex, to a £6.5 k rolex ( still have all excet the gucci) in 4 years here , i value the breitling as much as the rolex, my point being its not that hard to make the jumps once you have owned a quality watch imo. however i am carefull with them all, but wear them all in rotation, deano ps i have £200 watches i treat the same as my most expensive too.

  42. They can, but size is important. The difference between a 1mm and a 1.2mm screwdriver can be the difference between stripping the head and turning smoothly. It is a tiny amount of difference until you realise it is 20% bigger. Always use the largest screwdriver the screwhead will take. If you buy a 1mm screwdriver you will need a 0.8 or 1.2 for the next job, guaranteed

  45. For me, the risks far outweigh the potential benefits. At worst you could (i have) scratch the case, kill the water resistance, knacker the beat/timing, loosen the balance spring and/or lose bits. At best you get to risk the above all over again when the adjustment doesn’t achieve perfection, or when the weather changes and causes a +\- 1 sec change over 24hrs I gave up on that kind of micro-obsession pretty quick, but left a few casualties along the way. I remember each of their names in the quiet times before dawn .....

  48. Lume, good night visibility is something I don't need from every watch, but I am more likely to buy a well lumed piece. That said, a couple of my favourite watches don't even have good day visibility - they are both gold hands on gold dial. But as a rule, good contrast. Name on the dial? Not really for me, The only Swiss 'standard' I like is the Speedy, maybe a Rolex Air King. But since I am not chrono mad any more, I probably won't bother with a Speedy, and the Air King is nice, but a little low on punch, visually. It's not that I like a watch to stand out, my eyes are jus
