  5. Morning, It’s an unusual feeling for me, but I must be doing something right - or maybe just less wrong. The other day, my sainted watchmaker was having one of his periodic clear-outs and offloaded another bunch of “discards” to me. I’ve still to assess them in any detail, but here’s one of them today, this steel-cased Movado from around 1950 in its as yet untouched state and running on their own 17j Cal. 125. This one was made by the original company founded in 1881 and with whom the present-day Movado Group, despite claiming that heritage and having a funky website, has no conn

  15. Change for the evening, high grade 2824-2 with DD small seconds / big date module, and jolly well adjusted by some chaps in Switzerland, according to the timing lab results, and in my experience. I would say this is my best watch, since it is very precise, and I don't need to worry about leaving it dial up or crown up or keeping the PR above 50%. If I find it still ticking since I last set it, whether on the night stand overnight or the winder for a few weeks, it will be right. Still, not as much fun as my magic Miyota!

  18. I'm definitely doing something wrong. I took a watch to a local watchmaker, hoping to develop this kind of relationship and take shovelfuls of discards of his hands. All I got was a ludicrously high estimate and a lead time of 8 weeks for a service. Have you checked your pulse? Nothing seems to have changed.

  20. I've got 60 in my collection at the moment, and that number seems to have stayed pretty stable for a while. If I see something I like I try to pay for it by selling one or more watches, which keeps the hobby more or less self funding most of the time, while introducing new blood into the collection. There are exceptions, of course, but mostly I only use money that has built up in my PayPal account from occasional watch sales (the money doesn't usually stay in there for very long... ) Here's how I store the watches in my home office, starting with the "top 20" all nicely protected in the

  21. Clearly what you're "doing wrong" is (probably) being a thoroughly decent human being. My watchmaker is almost certainly borderline sociopathic and, whilst not empathising with, obviously recognises a fellow non-people person when he sees one

  23. Mine (bless him) regularly tells me what ‘will’ appeal to me, usually something he has squirrelled away, & that spending the (mine) pension will be therapeutic for me ? Only last night he phoned tempting me with his latest irresistible offering. Small price to pay from one of only a very small number of ‘talented & competent’ watchmakers I have the pleasure of knowing. If you find a good one, be prepared to wait & pay their price promptly! In my experience, these old school ‘watchmakers’ may initially appear, shall we say uninterested (grumpy), but their ski

  26. I think around 30 would probably be an ideal number. I've thought about having a cull, and possibly moving some of my cheapies on, but I'm just too lazy to sort it out I've got watches that don't get worn in between battery changes, which seems a bit pointless...

  30. You can get told off for that. Mind you, I can understand the attraction but for me they don’t hold a lot of interest. I have one, I get into it, I drive it somewhere, I park it, I get out, and then I go and do something interesting.

  31. Wearing one of my favourites, opted for the Miyota movement so it was a bit more than yours, but did come on a great bracelet with solid end links, and great for a walk to the pond. Found a dry corner of the bench to sit on too. Result! It'll be dark in an hour. Lawks. Cider in the park again for me, I do like a picnic. I've got bread and pate too, just wish I'd brought my toaster ...

  36. Not correct. It's the grandma grandpa eBay story that is usually fake for the fake watch, e.g. "My dear old nan passed away recently and we found this Rolex in her drawer. We have no idea if it is genuine or not but we would like to sell it for £££££s" Ebay is littered with them.

  38. Another vote for Seiko from me Look no further than Amazon, a search for "Seiko men's" and narrowed down to automatics (includes Kinetic as well) comes back with over 200 to choose from, so he should be able to find one he likes. Hardly worth suggesting one specific watch IMHO as we don't know his taste, but this one looks nice for £199: Or for 100 quid more, so still within budget, he could go for the old classic:

  43. Next thing you’ll be telling me you do hourly updates on a spreadsheet. I’m not that organised, to much like hard work, I sold all the good ones and just kept the LV and some other bits and bobs. I do have a decent watch box which has more in it, not sure what though haven’t looked for a while , The main issue is what happened to the trainers that were in the boxes I repurposed but that’s a whole other story all together
