  9. Morning, Dating from c.1970, it’s this German-made Helbros Electric today. With more reflections than a circus Hall of Mirrors, this effort runs on the 7j Porta (PUW) Elechron 1001 electro-mechanical movement. Regards.

  14. New burgundy leather strap fitted to my Dad's old Avia, and I've been wearing it for the last two days. It now keeps excellent time, which is pretty remarkable for a 60+ year old watch: And of course, the gratuitous (and slightly out of focus!) wrist shot:

  23. eBay is patchy agreed, up until late last year , a German seller was selling counterfeit Hydroconquests that for all the world looked convincing ..... I reckon 95% of buyers would never suspect they had bought a Chinese special .... I only ever use eBay if the seller also has either B&M presence or is an established UK seller... I know others dabble , but I am not confident enough to on there .... and this is said from an established eBay volume seller of yesteryear.

  25. Well, I can’t speak for others here, but I’m certainly no “expert”. However, I do have an interest in largely unknown movements and sometimes, like here, my ducks manage to shuffle themselves into a row. As it happens, Guba (Gustav Bauer) are on my radar, not only because they’re like hen’s teeth but also because I have but a single, solitary one, an 1100SC which was so seldom encountered that none of the main reference databases had an example. Happily, mine is now included in one of them for any future seekers of the obscure. Regards.

  26. One word of warning, don't haggle if it is cheap enough already as you may miss out. And when people do low ball me (for example $500 on a £900 watch, which happened recently), I return with suggestions for watches within their budget and I never give them any discount. That might just be me being offended though!

  27. One strategy I employed on ebay when I used to buy watches was not to bid in round numbers, which most people do. Often, putting in a bid for, say, £30 and a few random pence ie. £30.45 might just tip it in your favour and win it for you. It used to work for me.

  30. My wife doesn’t mind, because then she does not have to feel guilty when she wants to splurge out on a pretty vase, or antIque linens (apparently that is a thing). Mind you, her purchases tend to be a lot cheaper than mine.

  36. Just gonna bump this thread because..... I love Unimatic watches! AND... I've just ordered this! https://www.unimaticwatches.com/ubk-u/ I'm hoping it's worth the 200 quid it cost me, seems v v expensive to me but the proof will be in the pudding. Bear with me here, I know it's a lot of money but it's a special watch only its VERY VERY BLACK, like unbearably & noticablly black, makes it somewhat unbearable in certain instances. I'm thinking this SS bravely will make it inherently more versatile... I can put it back on its gorgeo

  37. A few years ago, my wife and I visited Memphis and Graceland. Upon returning to the UK and being in the mood for all things Elvis, I bought a Hamilton Ventura Elvis80 automatic. The initial appeal of such an odd shaped case soon wore off and my regret was further enhanced when occasionally the rotor arm whizzed around whilst winding the watch. It has therefore never been worn much although I still have it, I doubt I will sell it however as it reminds me of a great holiday.

  38. Try birth year watches if you want confidence in tbe watch / seller ( @scottswatches) By ebay technique is to offer what I think it's worth / what I'd be happy paying and then take 20% off that! Always add a note to the seller too to open up a line of comms, this will give them a bit of confidence in you and in turn you get to suss them out by their response. If bidding, as mentioned above, go for obscure amounts just above the next bid increment.
