A rare Waltham 1892 Model, No 45 Grade.

Recommended Posts

The 18 size Waltham 1892 Model, No 45 Grade is very rarely seen as only a total of 580 were produced over a 4 year period from May 1896 to August 1900.  Of these 280 were open face movements, and 300 were hunter movements.  All had 17 jewels in gold settings, adjusted to temperature and 5 positions with a patent micrometric regulator.  They were also Non Magnetic with a white metal balance wheel as opposed to the standard bi-metallic version, plus a white metal hairspring in place of the blued steel hairspring.

This particular watch is from the single run of 300 hunter movements (7013701 - 701400).  For some reason the original buyer wanted an open face version but one wasn't available so Waltham equipped the movement with a rare Factory conversion dial so that the watch could be wound at the 12 o'clock position like a normal open face watch which meant that the seconds sub dial is positioned at the 3 o'clock position rather than the normal 6 o'clock position.  So, only 300 hunter movements were made, but I don't imagine many were ever fitted with a Factory conversion dial, add the fact that these 300 were made 120 years ago and quite a few must have gone missing over that time, I think makes this quite a rare item.  It's in great condition and keeps excellent time.

That is a stunning looking watch, I have a couple of pocket watches, but they never see the light of day :( I am actually contemplating purchasing a waist coat just so I can have a pocket to put it in!
