Services 5 Jewels ladies wrist watch

Recommended Posts

I have found a watch in my grandparents possessions. It says Services which I presume is the maker of the watch? Its gold in colour and also says 5 Jewels on the face and has a small dial on the face at the bottom between the 5 and 7. the services is written in a script like font with larger sweeping S at the start and end of the word . would like to find out anything about it? Thanks for reading. Lorna

Hi,

A photo would be useful, but I think Services were a Leicester based company who bought in watch movements from other makers, and put them in their own cases with their own dials.  If it says 'made in great britain'  or 'british made' at the bottom then it's likely to be a Smiths movement (the same company that made speedometers etc. for British cars).  These were made in a factory in Wales (do a search on 'Tick Tock Ystradgynlais'.  Smiths stopped making watch movements in the early '70's and I think Services switched to Japanese movements.  I also think some of the earlier watches (will say 'Foreign Made' at the bottom of the dial) may have had German movements.  There are a few people on this forum who know a lot more than me!
