VISIBLE Watches.

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know anything about "Visible" watches? I have seen one recently which is obviously of some age and of high quality. It has a a mechanical Swiss movement (poss 17 jewels) and 51589 on one of the cogs.
The back (at least) is silver and bears the hallmark and silversmith's mark on its inside with the number 417635 and the number 230 beneath it.

That is all I can offer at the moment but I may be able to get some photographs shortly.
In the meantime any information about this piece would be welcomed especially the history of the marque, its approximate age and if it has high enough prestige to make it worth pursuing.

If you've given it a search already, then Honour - TWF's resident super sluth may be able to help.

However there are many, many (MANY) small brands tied to a single jeweller or importer that have sprung up over the years

They're often not worth much, but can be beautiful watches with great movements.

If it needs servicing there are a couple of tame watchmakers on here who will take a look for a small sum.

I'm new to this site. Is "Honour" or "Super Sleuth" his user name? How do I contact a particular member on here?
This all seems very clandestine as if I am a character in a John le Carré novel looking for "Mr Big" and only have his code name.

This is the problem when people pick brand names without any thought how they'll come up in a Google search.

I've found a few Visible watches by looking on antiques sites. It doesn't help much, as none of the descriptions tell us anything we couldn't get from looking at the pictures. One site suggests 51589 refers to a 1911 patent, so that might be something to follow up. I looked on the National Archive, but the patent that came up under 51589 was much earlier and not related to watches.

The only thing that does become evident is that brand was in use from 1910s until at least the 1960s, if those date estimates are reasonable.
