Help with a MJ Tobias Watch

Recommended Posts

Sorry about another post asking if this is a swiss fake or not... I tried to look up other threads but I couldnt find anything that looked exactly the same. Any information you can share would be helpful. I know nothing about watches... and just came across this watch in a box of old stuff. If anyone knows how old it is that would be helpful too. Just wondering if it is worth keeping.

Thank you for your help! 692fac9e-2a65-46e3-b5b1-0f0ba88a4c11-jpe1e815f99-1d9d-482c-b7f0-e55cd0f5235f-jpea6fcd9d8-2e4c-47cc-8704-06404ed5890d-jpe

That's an interesting watch. I've never come across the name before, but there's a view common online that M J Tobias didn't exist and the watches bearing his name are fakes, using the reputation of another Liverpool watchmaker M. I. Tobias. However, both editions of "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" list M. J. Tobias & Co, Lord Street, Liverpool, 1814-c1880.

Can you get the movement cover off (the one with the Tobias name on)? A picture of the movement (works) would help identify it.

I'd keep it because it's interesting, and even more so if it was owned by a family member.

Very interesting, dear Spiny @spinynorman. I have done some reading on this subject and clearly, more research is needed. As you have suggested, I would certainly hope that @Nrbrenna keeps this watch and perhaps provides a few more pictures for us to consider.:)
