Vintage Benrus LED Watch

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, first post here!

I am looking at getting a Benrus LED (1976) and wanted to get some opinions on Benrus as a company. I know there have been a few iterations of Benrus, but was curious if anyone can speak to the quality of this watch. The asking price is up there so I wanted to know if it would be worth it - only one I can find like it on the market.

Hi and welcome.

For what it's worth, I have 10 Benrus watches comprising mechanical, electronic and hybrid EMQ movements, all from the 1960s and '70s. Their costs ranged from £18 to £50.

I don't have any quartz LED models and I'm afraid only you can determine whether the one you have in mind is worth it to you.

As I'm sure you are aware, Benrus is a very well-recorded brand, so there's plenty of reading out there.

Regards.

Oh wow, the asking price is 600 dollars! If it was originally worth so little I'm not sure I'm comfortable paying that much

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't sufficiently clear. The prices I quoted were what mine have cost me when buying them in recent years by which time they were, of course, already 40-50 years old. Some of them would certainly have been considerably more expensive when new.

I've no idea what the LED model would have cost new, or what they are worth today. There probably aren't too many left in working order nowadays, so perhaps the asking price reflects a degree of rarity. My initial response was more intended to indicate that, to me, Benrus was a perfectly decent brand of watches. Not high-end, but not bottom of the barrel either.

Regards.

Dear @grandaddy, you might like to know that I have written two Forum articles on Benrus, which you will find in my Topics section via the Forum search feature. They are as follows:

"Benrus"; posted on 15 September 2014.

"A Benrus Classic: The Dial-O-Rama Watches"; posted on 30 September 2019.

Benrus is an interesting company and worth collecting, in my opinion. Balaton has already discussed the question of pricing when buying pre-owned Benrus watches and I would echo the sentiment that they were a mid-market company; also, not being very well known in the UK, you should be able to pick up reasonably priced examples among the more general run of models.
