Is it commonplace for old alarm watches (50s & 60s) to have a hole on the back?

If so, does that make them more prone to getting dust/dirt inside.

Several early alarm watches had 2 piece case backs so as to create a resonance chamber, in order to amplify the alarm sound.

One of my 50's examples below show the watch assembly...

The movement is still protected from the ingress of dust/dirt.

Hope this helps.
