HAGF watch fans! This vintage Certina hand wind

Morning all! JLC today.

Morning, apparently silk watch straps used to be a thing, didn't have one handy, but knocked up this rather fetching band from some old nylons I had lying around and an antique egyptian hand loom.

The Rolex Oyster was also available in Unicorn and Rolco qualities, in 'Snowite' (sp?) cases.  This is the latter, and apart from having a lovely luminous dial (two shillings extra) the case back has survived jolly well too, suggesting it spent quite a lot of time on a one piece strap.

Think this combo looks quite snazzy, the juxtaposition of blue and green stripes a gentle echo of the black outline of the figures on the dial and the lume infill.

HAGF, and keep well.

J

Morning,

35mm Askania from the 1950s, running on a 17j AS 1188/1189. This one shows Swiss-made on the dial although the brand is generally thought to be German, having been originally founded in 1871 as Bambergwerke in Berlin.  From what was a major company 80 years ago, it gradually diminished over the years, passing through many hands before being closed on its 100th anniversary by the then owners, Siemens.

The name was resurrected in around 2004, again in Berlin, although Askania nowadays appears to be essentially a micro brand with the dials bearing a more stylised wordmark and the “Berlin 1871” heritage also being promoted.Yeah, well.

Regards.
