Teach me about G Shocks appeal?

Recommended Posts

New member here, watch lover and I guess I prefer more traditional looking watches, I'm not even big on chrono's with extra dials.

But I have never understood the appeal of the G Shock watches. I understand they are rugged and so accept that they might be perfect for someone doing a triathlon, but to me (and my simple eye) they all just look like toy/novelty/kids watches.

I am sure that I am wrong or very much in the minority, the few people I know that collect watches all have a draw full of G Shocks irrespective of the value or quality of their collection, but I've never understood the appeal or the price.

I am willing to learn, I accept that a lot about watches is personal taste and so unlikely to suddenly change, but there must be points I am missing beyond "it gets muddy and still keeps ticking!"

I'm all ears....

There are 2 key factors for me.

The first is that they can take a lot of punishment so are the first choice for situations where you want to wear a watch and it may take a knock. One of mine was nipped by an overexcited dog on Monday with no mark in sight. They also pre-date fitness trackers so before fitness trackers like garmin/fitbit/apple watch, they were and still are good for sports and activities.

The second reason which is more relevant to me now is the freedom of design and are similar to Swatch in that regard. They are a great fun option when that's what you want, based on what's in the diary.

I wear mine to give a bit of flair when cycling.

I understand the appeal, but I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing one. Can't remember the last time my watch was savaged by a dog.

Clearly the poor hound was triggered by the colours so I brought it on myself....

When I first heard about them, praised as the ultimate in functional watches, I expected to see something with super legible dial as well as all the durability.  In reality the design of the dials looks like appearance and novelty are the main aims, with readability pretty low down the priorities.

Back when I was at school (many years ago) my mate had one of the originals and I sooooooooo lusted after it. Sadly my parents couldn't afford such things so I never got one.

So I blame my parents and Douglas S. It's their fault  I do own one now though.

Actually he got a Commodore 64 too...Lucky blighter!

I give Casio credit here for shifting the relevance and market of G-Shocks to design over functionality. Fitness and activity watches have left them behind (G-Shock's smart watches seem a bit behind the curve to me) so they've pivoted to style over substance deliberately.

I think it's working - i'm not sure they would've got away with a £500 Rose Gold GMW 10 years ago.

I'm new here, but if there is a sub-forum for the C64, please could someone direct me to it!

A nice read, I do like the White on Black (left of the three) aswell, a little easier to read (I've recently started to realise that perfect sight is not a lifetime gift and started finding myself moving paperwork forward and backwards in front of my face to find the sweet spot!)

I must say I am a little taken with this watch in the article to, and I've not owned a digital watch since primary school!

I think I would worry about clicking my fingers and accidentially deleting half of the planet wearing this one :swoon:

If you need them, for less than £100 a G Shock can offer functions that few others do for the money. I have one which is radio controlled and has multi alarms which I use daily to remind me of important things. I tried out a few before I got the one that suited my needs, some had a bamboozeling amount of functions, data storage, compass etc etc, which I wouldn't use, so they got moved on.

Gshocks are great go anywhere/ work anywhere watches. I worked in a hostile environment/role for many years where the watch suffered daily abuse.

The only thing that happened to it was the strap finally wore out after 10yrs:biggrin:. Oh and the black coating wore off the guard. I still have it (along with a few others) and it still works perfectly. I quite fancy a yellow one tbh

Some do , most don't. If you look harder you will see a variance of nuanced aesthetics which make the range one of the most fascinating out there. As mentioned the Octagon series last year sold in astonishing quantities and I am willing to bet hardy any were sold to kids. Have to admit I am not a fan of almost all of them, but I own one [ thanks to @Cassie-O nagging me for weeks ] and will probably end up with another by year end ... so my advice is look harder.

OP: it depends on what model G Shock you are looking at.

You have the entry, mid tier and then the higher end models and they all have something different to bring to the table.

I’m fortunate enough to have a couple of MR-G models and they have a Seiko produced and finished titanium case. These are also assembled in the premier production line at the factory in Japan. The fit and finish is equivalent to any mid level Swiss brand out there.

I love the MT-G and Frogman models too but looking to cut down the collection to just a handful:

Great reply.

My honest thoughts on a lot in those pictures remains unchanged, but it has lead me to look at this, with serious consideration for a future purchase.

My GW-3000M-4AER is solar powered so never needs a battery and has multiband functionality and is reset every night to the correct time so is very accurate.

At around £300 it's cheap enough, it takes all the knocks whilst riding a mountain bike and all my DIY thumping around, it's my beater watch for holidays snorkelling and swimming and looks fairly cool.

I've had it now for 5 years and it hasn't missed a beat at all.

Look up the reviews of the Casio G-Shock GW-M5610. You may not like the aesthetic, but the functionality is astounding for the price, £90 on ama-zon. Many watches have more "presence" in the market, but none tell time in a more value to performance ratio.

Some people have called this watch "the best watch in the world".

Other people may disagree, I think I'm with the group that thinks it should be issued to our military.

I have that model but in a different colour. It wears huge on the wrist.

The case is what I would call XL, whereas the current gen MTG is an L.

Here’s a comparison so you understand the size of the thing:
