To Cuss or to Kuss, beginners question

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am trying to purchase an antique clock for my father for his 80th birthday as he already has a good collection. I am new to this though!

I've found a nice looking Camerer Cuss and Co 19th Century Fusee Wall Clock.

My question is with the rudimentary research I have done, the Kuss family changed their name to Cuss due to anti-German sentiment in the first world war. Does that mean a Camerer Cuss & Co clock/watch cannot be older than the first world war, or did they go back and change the name on the faces after the rename?

thanks!

Hi

Originally Cammera Cuss & Co started out as David Kuss & Andrew Kammerer.

Both arrived in London (1845) from Germany, with the intention of selling Black Forest Clocks.

At the beginning of the Great War, due to anti-German sentiment, & being “Loyal British Citizens” they changed their names.

A good friend of mine spent time, after qualifying as a watchmaker, working for the business.

He still talks fondly of his time there.
