Tudor Black Bay - when to buy?

Recommended Posts

I make my final payment on my Oris in December and I have enough in the watch fund for a deposit on a Tudor Black Bay.

My preference is for a blue 41 but I will need to try it on as I believe the lug to lug is 50mm. So I may end up with a 58 or perhaps a 36.

Anyway, my question is when do you think I should buy one? Are the prices likely to rise any time soon? Is there any chance of a black Friday or January sales discount or should I buy one ASAP to avoid an rrp bump?

If you are buying on interest free credit then I doubt you will find much in the way of a discount to be had. We had common ground with the lady we dealt with, knew her parents, but she still couldn’t do anything for us. Got some Cartier Champagne and a promise to be looked after for service costs but no hard cash. You often see a free winder or watch roll available though.

I would doubt there will be an official sale of Tudors anywhere soon and so you could try a cheeky ask and see what happens.

Not sure about when to buy one but perceived thinking is the best time to buy a watch is yesterday. The second best time is today. Given there hasn't been a price rise recently,  I would say don't leave it too long.

Depending on where you go, in the past discounts have been negotiable at (some) high street outlets. Mind you, I do have a "secret weapon" though. :laughing2dw:

No chance with a BB58 of the different flavours, they are trying the engineer the wait-list scenario of their big brother company (same for the GMT and the new panda chrono). The issue with the 41s and the GMTs is they are so slab sided and fat rather than the lug to lug.

I'd say they'll generally look to nudge up the prices as the equivalent Sub, Daytona, GMT gets nudged up too, at least until everyone wakes up to the fact they are overpaying for machine made workhorses!

If it were me, I'd stick with my Oris.

But if you're set on a Tudor, I'd waste no time trying them on to nail down the exact one you want to be ready to grab one when you can in December.  Indeed it might be necessary to order what you want.  You need to find a friendly Tudor AD, or at least one that is interested in your business!

As for discounts, if what I hear about the limited nature of Tudor stock coming in to ADs is true, the rise in popularity of Tudor from obscurity 3 or 4 years ago to globally highly desirable now (at least for divers and chronos), would suggest it's unlikely you'll get anything off SRP.  What deals are available in the January sales are usually a function of what didn't sell in the run up to Xmas.  My gut feeling (I have no crystal ball - sapphire or otherwise ) is that only sticking (unpopular) stock will be on sale.  Whether that's likely to apply to anything from Tudor, I really couldn't say.

Although, what's a promise worth, unless it's in writing?

Very true Norman, I’m a trusting soul though and would take it on the chin and leave the shop with a smile and all of my future business should they  renege.

Thanks, that's a good idea. My plan is to see if I can try some on in town on Monday. Decide on the one I want. Try to get a discount for a cash sale as my wife is allowing me to borrow from our savings and pay that back over 5 years. If no discount or satisfactory deal then I can always buy from AMJ who are also doing a free 350 quid watch winder which I can then sell on. Sorted.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and comments

I got my Tudor BB58 blue from AMJ watches. No discount but a great service and one of the most beautiful but simple watches I own. I would definitely buy from them again.

I recently tried on these three at an AD and Of them the Pelagos LHD in Titanium was the one that stood out for me. Obviously we all have different tastes so best get out there and try a few on.

So I escaped from the Argyle Arcade having managed to try on a black dial 36. It was perfect. They had a 58 but not a 41. Didn't see the point in trying on the 58 due to the instant love I felt for the 36. When you know, you know. Was glad they only had the black one as I didn't feel any guilt in leaving the shop and buying a blue one from AMJ as soon as I got home. Get in there. Also got a copy of Revolution. So a very good trip all round.

With you on that, the others are trying to much. That Pelagos, the more you know the less you have to show.

I do like the matte colours and poker chip look of a Pelagos. The blue one really looks like a poker chip! That titanium one is a loverly looking watch
