I don't know how big your wrist is but if its normal or small I would be steering you towards vintage.    For under £1000 there a a host of decent offerings from an Omega Deville to a Universal Geneve.   All are going to be great value and quality items plus they have a bit of character and history to them

You’ve got there before me. If you buy something from the Golden Age from the 50s to early 70s there is almost an embarrassment of riches.

Opinions may differ, but they also tend to be a better size for a dress watch. More modern ones are too big. The CW Malvern above is 40.5 mm, the original was 38 mm.

The CW Malvern 595 is stunning at 39 mm and 5.95 mm in height. Only available secondhand these days, unfortunately.

Why don't you want Seiko or Orient?

Own too many already

If money was no object I'd be stuck between a Chopard Luc auto and a Lange & Sohne 1815. This perhaps will give you some idea of my daft expectations of picking up something nice on the cheap.

Right, super cheap, quartz (sorry) has a bit of Chopard Luc about it and I can promise first hand that it is much better quality than you are justified in expecting at the price point.

A bit of offering you could have the pair for about £100ish!

Being a bit pedantic but i was always under the impression a dress watch would be a two hander , no date and no lume? i know we operate under looser guidelines now but i aim to get a white gold dress watch on a leather strap conforming to this

that CW595 is bang on the money

Nice looking watches, but not hitting the spot for me.

Not dressy enough, but it is the nicest Eliot Brown watch I've seen

On a big screen zoomed in that white Ornake seems to have a lot of discolouration on the dial. The black one's not exactly pristine either. Whether they've both had hard lives or it's something about that brand, I don't know.

I committed a cardinal sin......I bought a quartz.

And to make it worse I bought a Frederique Constant quartz.

It was cheap. It looks shiny

I'll always have a soft spot for FC.

Another bloody thread that’s cost me money! I’ve been hanging my nose over one of these for a while now and at half price I couldn’t resist!

Everyone needs a Timex in the collection right?

Damn... I have also been hovering over this one for a while, and that is SO cheap... must RESIST!

They get a bit of a hard rap from some but those I've seen in the flesh have been of impressive quality. I'm now waiting on a slimline model. Fairly simple, but it hit the mark. I'm surprised there aren't more gold dress watch options in microbrands. Are they considered a bit old fashioned?
