Where Do You Buy Your Watches?

Recommended Posts

Am new to the forums so forgive me if this is an exhausted topic...

Just wondered where everyone purchases their watches?

High street jewellers, online retailers, online auction sites, bootfairs, etc?

Would love to know specific shops, websites or places and people's experiences as am always on the look out for watches and would much prefer to follow personal recommendations than ambling along aimlessly!

High street jewellers usually, friends of friends (its amazing how many come your way when people know your into watches!) and e.bay when I feel like flying by the seat of my pants! :D

If your splashing a lot, you need a specialist...either a reputable jeweller or a forum like this one. Simply for peace of mind.

If your bargain hunting, or looking for something you dont mind having to fix up, E.bay is ok.

I'd never buy swiss from e.bay, but I've had some bargain Japs needing nothing more than glass or a battery.

Why no swiss watches from ebay? If they have all the paperwork and receipts etc then surely there shouldn't be any problems with authenticity or is it more to do with the mechanics not being up to scratch?

Just personal preference. I simply wouldn't trust buying anything high end from there...too many GOOD fakes about.

The authenticity problem does seem like a minefield. I would have thought that receipts and paperwork might make ebay more appealing as it does open up the market a great deal to find what you are looking for.

Buying here takes a lot of stress out of the process

Personally I would only buy new from an AD and I would only buy pre-owned from here or another trusted forum.

Great to find a site that is both honest and comes with such high recommendations.

I have been monitoring the sales threads for weeks and as I am now actively posting, hope to be able to start purchasing soon. Gives me far more faith than ebay...

1) Here / TZ-UK in the main.

2) I've bought Damasko new from Time Factors & Damasko directly.

3) When the exchange range was better, I bought a few from WUS

4) A few cheap Seiko's from ebay.

If you live anywhere near an antique market, I mean genuine antiques, there is often a clock and watch seller nestled in a corner somewhere, very often worth a look.

AD for new

Net for SH

I can personally recommend watchguru & watches.co.uk

I know people are wary of SH over the ether but I've spent in excess of £20k between the sites above without any problems.

In fact I've had really good service from the both, hence the recommends

When I was looking at various websites, there are a lot that offer watches for sale by companies that do not allow online sales which has made me sceptical about buying online. After all the great recommendations on here, I'm now more likely to look online but has anyone had any experience with watches by companies like Breitling, Rolex, Tag etc, ie those that do not allow online sales as I have read that some retailers will take the serial numbers off to hide them from the manufacturers. surely this will then make identifying authenticity difficult?

I have bought from Parkersjewllers you can find them online and the have a good selection of pre owned watches. Friendly, reliable and can return the item for a full refund if not happy. Good idea to give them a call as you can sometimes get a reduction off the listed price.

I was just in a local jewellers (in dublin) they had a seiko orange monster with a rubber strap onsale. I know that one with it's box and papers comes to around €170 ish on ebay. I asked him how much, he said €360. I couldn't believe it. I'm sure he's charging the market rate and a price that is competitive with his competition but that price was something else.
