Tag Heuer McClaren MP4-16 Limited Edition (999) Chronongraph. This has come , in a round-a-bout way, into my possession. I've never liked many TH's and my opinion has been clouded by a couple of 2000 quartz divers that passed through, they looked and felt like market stall tat.
This is, apparently, worth £800+, there is one on ebay now for £1150. Titanium (I don't like Titanium, it feels cheap), carbon fibre dial (looks cheap), sapphire crystal, 39mm, quartz (prob ETA) no seconds sub dial (?) and an integrated rubber strap (deployment/titanium) that does not fill the case aperture. It comes in a lovely box with an engine shim and a piece of useless carbon fibre from a McClaren F1 car..........allegedly.
I know my photo is bad but it probably makes the watch appear better than it is, if it did not have "Tag Heuer" then you really would think it had come from a market stall giving you ample change from a tenner. I don't like any tie-ins but the horrible chrome "McClaren" logo and it's small size (wears like 36mm) makes it look, and feel, like teenage boys fashion watch.
Who'd have bought these new? I would not even wear it never mind buy it.
Bought by people who know little about watches but like exclusivety (limited edition) and follow F1. A good marketing ploy by McLaren and TAG, they have to find some way of paying the drivers salaries.
I actually quite like some TAG watches and to be fair that picture makes the watch look worse than other pics on google. Still wouldn't buy it though.
In fact I've had a couple of Tag quartz watches & just didn't like them at all. I showed one to a pal and he said: "oh, a Tag? Let's have a look? nah, don't like it"
Hi Trigger I don't think Neillp's remarks are elitist. He's commenting on the fact that some folk are into 'fashion' watches, but don't care what's behind the dial....which is really what you've gone on to say as well, but in a different manner.
I think the main thing that spoils it is the carbon fibre, it's just too complicated for the face and makes everything look too messy. The McLaren logo should probably be one of the most prominent parts, but it's lost in all the carbon weave. Similarly, what's going on with the sub dials? The watch itself is a half decent shape and design, but overall I don't think it works. Certainly doesn't look like 800 quids worth to me.
hi its ok but i do not like the strap one bit tags like this are way over the top price wise.i have just got hold of a tag f1 that cost a bit new as well and am not that keen on it .some photos of it.all the best woody77.
Ok Woodey, not my thing, but a regular good looking chrongraph, I can see why people would buy that. But the Kirium, I can't see one thing that is aesthetically pleasing, I don't like the case shape or size, I don't like the bezel or the "look at me" carbon face nor the subdials or even the hands and the McClaren logo is a joke. Why have an intergrated strap but not fill the aperture? Why no seocnds dial? I can't see anything wrong with the date window and wheel.
I've just googled for images of wristwaches with an F1 tie-in or theme and there are umpteen choices for people who know, or know nothing, about watches.
This is probably the most horrible watch that I have ever handled, and I owned one with Hitler AND Stalin on the face, I'd say the same if it was worth £80, even at £8 I couldn't endorse it...................
I still love the Carrera Tachymetre, but I have to agree with the general consensus that they are by and large fairly flipping ugly. That McLaren has got a face that only a mother could love.
No, in this instance it is them who do the threatening, unfortunately. I go back in 8 days for the bike ......................................anybody with £800+ who has an unyielding emotional pull to my lovely Tag Heuer can pm me................
