Came across the Alpina watch brand but not heard much about them. Anyone any experience or comments about their watches. I have been looking at the Extreme Diver and Startimer Pilot's. They also seem to use their own "in-house" movements so unsure how they stand up in comparison to say a standard ETA movement. Also heard they are now owned by Frederique Constant - is this a good thing ? :blush2:

Alpina's actually been around for quite some time but suffered in the rush to quartz in the late 1970s/1980s. The original Swiss company was bought by German investors and re-incorporated in Germany. It was taken over by Fred. Constant (FC) about a decade ago.

The increasingly restricted availability of ETA (Swatch Group) movements to third parties means that many manufacturers are having to find alternatives or make more of (if not all of) their own parts. FC was particularly vocal about the right of Swatch Group to restrict supplies of ETA movements. All this aligns with Alpina having "in-house" movements. What proportion is actually made "in-house" I couldn't say.

I've no experience of Alpina, so couldn't really offer an opinion, other than to say I have heard no negative comments about them. FC has a good reputation, although I think of it as a somewhat more female brand, if you like.
