Sterile?

Recommended Posts

I have heard many meanings for a sterile watch, but what does it really mean?

Here's some of them:

A watch that has no makers marks on the dial

A watch that nothing at all on the dial (like an Accurist diamond sort of thing)

A watch that is a copy/fake

A watch that has been steam cleaned

And finally, with apologies, a watch that has no ability to reproduce other little watches ;)

My understanding is that it has no makers marks like 'Seiko' or 'Automatic' '100m water resist' etc. on the dial.

Why is this done? Surely if you make a good watch you would want people to know who made it.

Some people just like it to be understated and without clutter to the dial.

Yup. That works & I like it. But now I have to ask you what it is.

Sometimes it's just a case that ' less is more ' and lets face it we wear them for ourselves and we know what they are, does it matter if no-one else does? ... :)

Is it one of the dot watchworks pieces?

It's a Seiko "military " with a 7S26 movement under that dial there is a date but obviously unseen with this sterile dial,

Done by a member on another forum I frequent, and bought by me.

What is it?? Can you share the knowledge?

I could, but then of course I'd have to shoot you.... :D .... Actually it's a one off prototype watch made by a Swiss OEM company that never got taken up for production and they were selling it off with a few other bits and pieces. It's a really nice watch with a good spec, as you can see below and I actually like the fact it's got a sterile dial and I know I'm not going to see another.. :) :-

ETA 2836-2

25 jewels automatic, sweep second f=28800 A/h

day: wheel (not visible as it is hidden by the dial)

date: quickset

hack feature

Sapphire Crystal

5ATM water resistance

Screw Down Crown

All Super Luminova markings

see-thru caseback

power reserve 40h

Thanks artistmike.

Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. Sworn to secrecy me.

Great spec, great watch, great story. Yes, being sterile really adds to the watch.
