Light Tent Photos - Various Watches

Recommended Posts

Good evening All,

I just bought a cheap light tent to try to improve my watch photos. After a few experiments this morning, I'm pretty amazed at the difference it has made. It makes it much, much easier to get a good shot without ruinous reflections.

Here are a few of the results. A couple of recent acquisitions plus two of my favourites.

First up, the most recent arrival - my Sturmanski Radiation Resistant chronograph:

Excellent - and the setup?

Here's a pic of the light tent.

Fairly simple light tent set with a fold-up square tent, a couple of coloured backdrops, two lamps and a kind of tripod - search for "Light tent" on Amazon and the same set comes up under a few different brand names. The camera is a nearly 10 year-old Canon EOS 350D with a Sigma 18-200mm lens on it.

I put the watches on top of one of my watch boxes and the red thing is a drinks coaster which I took from under my cup of tea.

The investment was really not that expensive, but worth every penny when you see the results.

Wow! Your photos are amazing, I've been struggling with watch photos for a while now, this could be the answer! I've just bought one :D

Really great photos. Thanks for sharing - the set up might be simple but the results are inspiringly good. I like the bold prop/composition - could be a future Wotsch signature

Lights for your tent - influence the colour cast etc.

Colour Temperature

Although most lamps emit “white†light, this can vary from a cosy “warm†white to a “cold†white according to the “colour temperature†of the lamp. The following chart shows the code numbers used for some of the most popular types:- Colour Temp Colour Code Designation Application 2700 827 Warm White,

Extra Warm White,

or Interna Similar light to “normal†incandescent bulbs, giving a warm “cosy†feel 3000 830 Warm White The colour of most halogen lamps. Appears slightly “whiter†than ordinary incandescent lamps. 3500 835 White The standard colour for many fluorescent and compact fluorescent tubes. 4000 840 Cool White Gives a more clinical or “high tech†feel. 6000 860 Daylight Fluorescent or compact fluorescent lamps simulating natural daylight. 6500 865 Cool Daylight Extremely “white†light used in specialist daylight lamps. That colour temperature chart is very interesting. Thanks!

Didn't have much time on Sunday, but here's the result of another session - this time with a Sony camera and a different drink mat:

This one's a difficult one to photograph as it is very shiny.
